I don’t know about you but, with March coming to a close, I’m ready to shove all my coats, sweaters, and heavy blankets to the back of my closet. Open the windows, and let the fresh air breath life into my mind, body, and home again.
Tis the season to renew and they don’t call it spring cleaning for nothing. We’ve slowly been removing the winter clutter in the Coleman-Turner house. And let me tell ya, every time a bag of unworn clothes or toys no longer in play leaves the house it feels like a weight has been lifted.
Both physically and mentally.
I love the opportunity for a good purge in order to reset, which is why I tend to look forward to the change in seasons. What better time to start anew?
So with spring right around the corner, I thought I’d share some ideas for you (and me!) to reset, refresh, and renew our mind, body, and home.
Spring Cleaning Ideas for your Mind
Set up a sleep routine
Getting proper sleep is so so so important. I’ve always been someone who prioritised sleep. I know that the better sleep I get, the better I’m able to handle what the day brings. Even as a mom, or heck – especially as a mom, sleep is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately it’s usually one of the first things to get cut when life gets hectic. If you’ve been feeling like you’ve been running on empty these past few months it may be a good idea to take a look at your sleep routine. It’s important to wind down at the end of the day in order to get good rest. So power down those electronics, wash yo face, and snuggle up to a good book or magazine before lights out.
A little digital detox is so good to refresh the mind. It doesn’t have to be anything dramatic, something as simple as having a cutoff time at night (mine is at 9PM, sometimes 8PM because I’m an old lady) and giving yourself 20min – 1hr in the morning before logging back on can do wonders in helping you not feel like you’re a slave to your devices.
Practice changing your mental conversations
We all have certain stories we tell ourselves over and over and over. You’re too this, not enough of that, blah blah blah. Changing how you think and talk to yourself doesn’t happen overnight. But practicing being more self-aware, and acknowledging those moments when you’re being really hard on yourself are the first steps in changing your mental conversations for the better.
This goes along with unplugging from the digital world. Take that time away from your phone, computer, or tablet, and connect with your favourite people IRL. Real life connections will always be richer than those you have online.
Make time for play and creative pursuits
And hey! While you’re at it, why not make time for some fun off screen as well! Do whatever interests you – cooking, writing, yoga, hiking, shopping…the options are endless and entirely up to you.
Spring Cleaning Ideas for your Body
Say no to processed sugar
It doesn’t have to be forever, but cutting your sugar intake for even a couple of weeks can be incredibly beneficial. I’ve done it before and noticed better skin, higher natural energy, and weight loss – YES!
Just as with sugar, this doesn’t have to be a forever thing. However, avoiding or even entirely cutting out processed/packaged foods and instead focusing on adding more real, whole foods to your diet is a great way to get your body summer ready.
Release tension in your hips
Did you know, besides our neck and shoulders, we also tend to carry a lot of stress and tension in our hips. That’s why hip stretches can hurt so good, not only are you releasing tight muscles but also pent up anxiety and stress. So do your body and mind a favour by incorporating hip stretches into your fitness routine.
Revisit your fitness routine
Speaking of fitness routines, could yours use a little refresher? Or maybe you fell out of your routine entirely? Either way, the arrival of spring is the perfect time to get your body moving again and shake off that winter weight.
Spruce up your skincare routine
Winter weather tends to do a number on our skin. Why not give it a fresh start with some extra TLC either at your favourite spa or DIY at home. Time to get your summer glow on.
Spring Cleaning Ideas for your Home
Purge your closet
This is probably one of my favourite things to do when the seasons change. It’s a great way to freshen your wardrobe and make room for any new goodies you may pick up. It also helps eliminate shopper’s guilt by keeping you from adding stuff on top things you already have.
Start in your closet and keep going through your entire home. Create some space and donate, sell, or toss things you’re no longer using.
I used to not think much about dusting, but ever since I introduced the Clean Mama method to keeping a clean home I have become a believer! A good dusting can really alter the look and feel of a place. And if you make it a regular thing, it isn’t as daunting as you make thing. And that’s coming from someone who has two cats and a toddler to clean up after.
Invite in more light
Pull back the shades. Clean those windows (mine are forever covered in little toddler hand prints). And let that spring sun shine in!
Add more green
I love having some greenery in my space. Whether it’s real or artificial, green plants seem to add more life to a room. If you’ve got an empty corner and aren’t sure what to do with – add some green to it!
What do you think? Anything you love to do in order to refresh for the new season?
