Breaking My Mumsy Style Rut

Ever feel like you’re constantly playing it safe when it comes to your style?

Even if your closet is filled with wonderfully fun and stylish pieces, you rarely experiment.

Always going for the tried and true pairings – that top with those pants, that dress with those shoes.

Or in my case – that t-shirt with those leggings.

We’ve discussed my postpartum style and yes it’s still in full swing.

I’m in what I like to call a mumsy style rut.

Different day, same leggings is my motto.

{editor’s note: when I say same leggings I don’t mean the exact same pair – I have a handful of basic black leggings to rotate through. I’m not THAT bad, people}

To be honest, I’m still a bit insecure about my body and struggling to make pre-pregnancy clothes work again.

Now more than ever I feel the need to hide my perceived “post-pregnancy flaws” – stretch marks, a tummy, flabby thighs, butt, and hips. They all seem to stick out like a sore thumb in my eyes.

So I’ve been avoiding the wonderfully fun and stylish pieces in my closet, for fear that they don’t work on me anymore.

And while that may be true, I’ll never know until I actually try.

Which brings me to this outfit – an attempt to try new things and get my style confidence back inspired by Dia&Co’s Try-Day Friday initiative.

Dia&Co is a personalized clothing subscription box specifically for plus size. And while I’m technically not plus size, I felt drawn to their confidence project and love how they’re encouraging women to find and embrace their personal style – no matter their size!

So here I am, trying something outside my current comfort zone.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with shorts.

The idea of them is always cute and fun, but the reality of them on me is usually lacklustre as I feel they put a huge spotlight on my thighs – one of the biggest insecurities I have about my body.

But Try-Day Friday is all about challenging the idea that certain clothes are only for certain people.

And gosh darnit – these shorts are super cute! I bought them for that very reason.

And despite my initial hesitation at the thought of styling them – I’m quite pleased with how it all turned out.

A chunky sweater pairs nicely with the lightweight material of the shorts and opaque tights. Add on some OTK boots, and ladies and gents we’ve got ourselves a winner!

I’d totally feel comfortable wearing this out and about for a mommy and me coffee date, drinks with friends, or even a night out with the hubs 💑.

I was surprised at how quickly I took to this challenge.

It totally sparked inspiration in me and I’d love to continue with the idea of trying something new every Friday to help break me out of my tshirt and leggings style rut.

A personal Fancy Friday challenge of sorts.
