Developing a Proper Skincare Routine: My Journey to Better Skin at 30

Yeah, that’s right.

It only took me 30 years to realize how important it is to have a proper skincare routine.

Despite the pushing from my mom and America’s obsession with fresh, young looking skin – I never really took note of how I was treating my skin.

I relied on the fact that I’d always had pretty decent skin and as they say – “black don’t crack, y’all.

So I switched products in and out, skipped washing my face at night, and attempted to cover up problem spots with makeup when I could.

It wasn’t until earlier this year when I really started to notice the beating my skin had taken and how rough it was beginning to look.

I always prided myself on looking younger than I really am. But after years of a subpar skincare routine, 30 hit and suddenly I wasn’t looking so young and fresh anymore.

And while makeup can do wonders, let’s be real – it doesn’t solve the problem, it just covers it up for the time being.

So I came to the conclusion that since I’m an adult now 😉, it was time to take responsibility for my skin problems before they got so out of hand there was no turning back.

I’m all about simplicity. So after doing some research on methods to better your skin, I developed a routine that I’m happy to report has proven to be quite effective.

Having a proper skincare routine is always a hot topic so I thought I’d share what I started to do on a daily basis with you. In hopes it may help with any skincare issues you may be dealing with.

My Skincare routine for better skin at 30

In general there are 3 steps to my routine:

  1. Wash
  2. Tone
  3. Moisturize

All have proven to be essential – if I skip one, I simply don’t get the same results.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my morning and evening routine.

Morning routine

Every morning after breakfast and a hot shower, I wash my face with a gentle gel cleanser {I’m currently using this from Avene}. Followed by a quick swipe of Bioderma’s Sensibo Micellar Water solution.

Then, since I’m prone to oily-skin, I take a dollop of Avene’s Cleanance Mat, rub it in and follow it with an oil-free moisturizer {currently using Olay’s}.

After that if I know I’m going out somewhere or doing blog photos I’ll put on makeup, but most days I’m all about being makeup free!

Evening routine

In the evening, usually after I’ve had my nightly scoop of ice cream {babyceetee loves his ice cream, I can always feel him do a little dance when I eat some 👶🍦💃}, I’ll wash my face again using the gel cleanser and follow it with the micellar water solution.

Then I’ll give my face a good sprtiz with Avene’s Thermal Spring Water Spray, and let it dry while I brush my teeth.

Finally, I close it all out with the Cleanace Mat and an oil-free night cream.

Helpful add ons

While the routine above is what I follow on a daily basis, I also make sure to do these extra bits to really promote better looking skin.

1. Deep Cleanse & Exfoliate

Twice a week I’ll use a mask to either deep clean or exfoliate. I’ll alternate between the two, depending on what I did the last time or what I’m feeling my skin really needs at the moment. This is a great way to get back to a fresh base twice a week.

2. Morning exercise

While I’d like to say I exercise every morning, it’s more like every other or every 2 other mornings. Regardless, I’ve found that a little sweat in the AM is a natural way to open the pores, clear out toxins, and give your skin that healthy glow.

3. Water. Water. And did I mention water?

This is a known fact – drink more water if you want healthier looking skin. I definitely notice when I have a day where I don’t drink as much water. My skin looks dull, tired, and I’m more prone to waking up with break outs the next day.

I’m not sure if I’m just lucky and was blessed with really resilient skin, but within the first month of diligently following this routine I saw results.

My skin that was prone to breakouts, blemishes, oil patches, dry patches, enlarged pores, and just looking rough and uneven in general started to clear up.

It was softer, firmer, felt moisturized with being oily, and had a natural glow {though that could be attributed more to pregnancy hormones, I guess we’ll see once babyceetee has arrived}.

And I continue to see improvements each day, making me feel more confident about heading out the door makeup-free and looking comfortable in my skin.
